Norwegian Folk Dance Workshop - Fall 2023
The NYC Spel- og Dansarlag (a junior branch of Scandia NY)
is hosting a gender-free Norwegian folk dance workshop for
total beginners, focusing on dances from Telemark!
Telemark dances are some of the world's most beautiful couple
dances, and feature groovy, hypnotic music, improvisation,
    and lots of spinning!

We'll have live music from super fiddlers, enthusiastic dance
instruction, and good vibes all around.

Each workshop will cover different material- so feel free to attend any or all of the workshops!

FREE, and open to the public. Wear sturdy socks
for dancing in, or be ready to dance barefoot!
    Masks optional, but welcome.

    I’m a composer-performer that primarily plays the Hardanger d’amore,
a sympathetic-stringed instrument inspired by the traditional
Norwegian Hardanger fiddle. From 2019 to 2021 I lived in Oslo, based
at the Norwegian Academy of Music for a Fulbright project and
Master’s study in Nordic folk music. During this time, I fell in
love with folk dance and threw myself onto the dance floor at any
chance I got! It was the perfect way to immerse myself in a vibrant
community and really get to the heart of the music that I was
playing. I perform original and improvised music regularly in
Brooklyn; to learn more about my music visit www.zoshawarpeha.com

I am a hobby musician and have been dancing and fiddling with the
Scandia NY group for nearly 20 years. I play some Swedish tunes on
a regular fiddle, but my favorite part of our Wednesday dances is
when I get to play hardanger fiddle for the Norwegian set. I am
originally from Berlin, Germany, and also a regular at Brooklyn
Contra and the Balkan Golden Fest. Over the years I have been
lucky to study with amazing Norwegian hardanger fiddle players
and dance teachers from many traditions, and Telemark is a
favorite. I love leading Telemark dances and making the figures
follow the music. I love following and twirling. I love learning
the mesmerizing tunes and playing them in the middle of the room,
feeling like I am single handedly moving the couples over the
    dance floor.

I'm a dancer and fiddler who has been dancing and playing with
the Scandia NY group since 2017. I love Swedish and Norwegian
folk dance, and I've had the great luck and fortune to learn
music and dance from teachers from all over the United States
and Norway. I'm super grateful for so many years of fun, and
I'm looking forward to introducing people to this wonderful
    dance and music!
