Choshi (調子)

Choshi is one of my favorite pieces, and it is good for beginners! It is short, simple, and easy to memorize: something good to have in your metaphorical (or literal!) back pocket.

It is a tuning and warm up piece: Cho (調) shi (子) can be translated as "tuning"!

It is also something of a rosetta stone: many players you encounter from different schools and teachers will know this piece. It is always fun to play something together!

I've learned this piece three times, from players with very different lineages, and it was very close to the same each time, with some minor variations in pitch, number of repeated notes, and how the phrases were shaped. The notation I've written here is how I remember the piece, which is probably a composite of all three.

Fingerings

Here is a very basic fingering chart! Take it with a grain of salt: the best ways to learn fingerings is piece by piece, gradually learning fingerings as necessary and internalizing the different possibilities and patterns of the instrument.

Many pieces, as taught by different teachers, will have special fingerings for different tunes, and which are often not included in the notation: this is a fun part of the richness of the tradition, and isn't something you should miss out on!
